The Mont Blanc Tunnel is
a road tunnel in the Alps under Mont Blanc mountain, linking Chamonix,
Haute-Savoie, France and Courmayeur, Aosta Valley, Italy is one of the major trans-Alpine transport
routes, particularly for Italy, which relies on the tunnel for transporting
as
much as one-third of its freight to northern Europe. It reduces the route from
France to Turin by 50 kilometers and to Milan by 100 kilometers. It
is managed on the Italian side by SITMB (Società
italiana per azioni per il Traforo del Monte Bianco).
The Challenge
The tunnel authorities wanted to grant
free access to their staff vehicles and personnel without the need to stop at
the toll gates.
The Solution
Eight TRANSIT readers have been installed
at the Mont Blanc Tunnel, some on the Italian side and some on French side for
automatic access for staff and to ensure driver and vehicle identification for
restricted areas to the tunnel.
